Council is seeking your comments on the Chatswood Mall refurbishment. Please join in the discussion below.
The refurbishment of Chatswood Mall is expected to commence in February 2010, following the adoption of the Concept Design by Council.
The proposed design significantly improves pedestrian circulation and increases the versatility of the space through the creation of a central spine which will accommodate footway dining, market stalls and public seating. The dominant feature of the Central Spine will be a row of Chinese Elms that will over time form a deciduous natural canopy above the seating areas, which will provide sun during the winter and shade in the warmer months.
The design palette features high quality classic materials, such as granite paving and hardwood, in addition to contemporary features such as interactive public art and free-form curved seating that will incorporate feature lighting that with colours that can be change for events and festivities.
The free-form seating is also integral to the water sensitive urban design (WSUD) system by channelling stormwater to irrigate trees at their critical root zones. Other sustainable objectives include the reuse of the existing concrete base and low-energy LED Lighting.
Council is proposing to have the works out to tender in October, which will enable construction to commence in February 2010.
The nature of the design and materials proposed will ensure the mall retains a clean and contemporary appearance long into the future. The upgrade will transform one of Chatswood’s principal gateways, in addition to maximising the flexibility of public space for a wide variety of uses and events.
The proposed plans are available at Councils Offices at level 4, 31 Victor St or online at www.willoughby.nsw.gov.au .
