Newcastle Connectivity

Jodi McKay MP Minister for Tourism and Minister for the Hunter

This consultation has concluded. You can still browse the site but the discussion area will no longer accept new comments or votes.

The rail line into the CBD of Newcastle has long been a source of controversy and debate in the community. When the issue was last examined the Government decided that services to the heart of the CBD should be retained due to strongly held community views.
This online forum is designed to allow the community to discuss this issue. We welcome ideas relating to investment and growth in the city as well as how to improve connectivity.
The results of this discussion forum will be forwarded to the CBD Taskforce which is examining ways to drive investment in Newcastle and key challenges including transport and connectivity.

Time after time we have to justify having this line after attacks from the development groups. I have never seen any proof removing it would be positive. All the experts I've heard say it should stay. Its all very well for people to think it will be a cure all for the city but once it is gone its gone forever. more ...

If the federal government has a spare $M160 to remove the rail, would we prefer to do that or build a bridge at Stewart Avenue, an at grade crossing at Worth Place and a few million to grow flowers beside the rail line?

VOTES
5

The Herald advises that the rail could be removed from Wickham to Newcastle for a mere $160 million dollars. A bridge at Stewart Avenue, over or under the rail would cost about $M50, throw in a crossing at Worth Place and Steel Street and there's still plenty left over for gardens all the way to Hamilton. Now isn't that a better use of $M160? more ...
