A 2009 survey by the Heart Foundation showed that at least seven New South Wales Councils had smoke-free policies that applied to bus shelters. Randwick City Council has resolved to ask the community whether there should also be a ban on smoking in bus shelters in Randwick City. The bus shelters in Randwick are on Council owned footpaths and Council has the power to ban smoking in bus shelters.

Council is undertaking this community consultation to see what the community thinks of this proposal. Council is also asking the community to think about how such a ban could be enforced. In August 2009, Randwick Council adopted a policy “Smoking in the public place” which aimed to increase public awareness of the health risks from the inhalation of tobacco smoke and to take measures to curtail smoking in the public place and to minimise incidents of passive smoking.

How should any ban be enforced?

Examples of how a ban could be enforced are:

  • by signs
  • by rangers with fines
  • by an education campaign
