Do you know how to get the Clarence moving?

by Griffabear 12 Nov 2008, 3:45pm

We are on the look out for new or growing activities that people may wish to be involved in. Do you have a way to get the area moving? Could you help us provide an activity for the community? This problem is not going away and we need options that YOU want to be doing. Maybe someone has suggested something that you like the sound of... Bang the table and let us know.

Ic_relatesdoc Relates to survey: Which of the following activities would be most likely to get you moving?

Already these activities are within and accessible in the Clarence Valley and also promoted and advertised. Those that want that experience will get it it's like preaching to the converted! Perhaps agressive marketing towards unhealthy people will assist (like the smoking and melanoma campaigns).

Sometimes , even though an activity exists it is difficult to find. A council assisted information program would, I think, be helpful.

Hello to all at the Clarece Shire working on the Healthy Lifestyle Project. I will be a resident in the Clarence Shire as from May next year as I am building a home in Iluka. I wish to suggest an event to get people moving that utilizes the fantastic area that I will be living in. I call it Boots, Bike and Boat. With the national forest and the gorgeous Clarence to kayk on and beautiful scenery to ride through the only tough call is when, where and how far. Maybe two events or three to cater for all age groups. Skies the limit guys.

Best of luck with the programme.

Cheers Alana

Thanks for the idea Alana, as luck would have it, your request has already been acted upon by the Harwood Yacht Club. It will be a bike and boat event, taking in the Lower Clarence over 3 days with camping available. The event is planned for Autumn and is a great example of community ground swell in action! Look Forward to seeing you there!

We too are planning to build on land we purchased recently and move to Maclean. There are three things we'd like to see.

One of the things we love where we live now but haven't seen too much in the Clarence Valley are designate bike paths and lots of them. Particularly in the national parks and along coastal strips. It's easy and accessible and people participate to their level of fitness.

Secondly we have lots of activities like King of the Mountain (in Pomona), the Noosa to Pomona Mountain Bike race, lots of triathlons and Glasshouse Trails Competitions which draw huge community support and are heaps of fun for the whole family.

The third observation : the activities listed in the attached list on this site are fairly low impact and aimed at a particular groups. Some more challenging stuff would be excellent. More clubs focused on biking and boating rather than the low impact stuff.

Alana, There used to be a rowing regatta in Iluka that attracted rowers and spectators, the business community did well out of it and it was motivational for others and got many locals into rowing. you might like to explore what happened and why the regatta is no longer held. i have noticed that there are many boats moored in the Iluka Bay these days. but perhaps they should be required to move to allow a healthy active event to be re-activated. There was also a walkers group in Iluka and there is now a cycleway along the main road. It is a beautiful place I hope you enjoy your new home!

Thankyou..thankyou...thankyou...

I am impressed that the Clarence Valley Council is getting involved. Getting programmes up and running does take time and money to get the information out there to our neighbours, but once going will benifit us all.

The children have school sport activities and 'eat healthy' education taught in schools, but some of their parents could do with some help with healthy active programmes for adults only and some where their children can participate with them. A Family Affair

Keeping healthy and fit I believe is for all ages.

Elderly - What about the more…

I think the Bridge walkers would be a good group. I have found that walking acroos the Grafton bridge & back is 1km and it is great for the self conscious as not too many people see you.

We certainly need more places for people to park their bikes. Bike theft seems to be more and more common and we need to be able to park bikes in places that are prominent and visible to make it less likely that people will steal them. Retailers need to realise that people with bicycles have money to spend too!

Bike lanes are an obviously useful investment. Communities which provide off-roadside bike paths encourage both commuter riders and casual weekend mums, dads & kids to get out there and enjoy!

THIS WAS EMAILED TO THE ADMINISTRATOR

Hi,

We are a new business in The Clarence Valley, North Coast Surf Styles. We are a stand up paddle and surf school.

We now offer stand up paddle core fitness groups on the Clarence River from Grafton to Yamba. Stand up paddling is a fantastic way to get fit while taking in the scenery of the beautiful Clarence River. We are also offering this unique sport to schools in The Clarence Valley to help get the kids moving too!

We believe that stand up paddling for fitness and fun, is what the Clarence Valley needs to not only get moving but also to utilise and appreciate our awesome river.

Please take a look at our website www.northcoastsurfstyles.com.au and call us for more information or if you are interested in finding out about our next free demonstration morning.

yours kindly,

Roger Saunders & Renee Bridge

Use planning rules to make sure all future building of houses is within walking distance of facilities such as shops, play areas and schools. This would encourage more walking and would get people active.
