Several years ago, Council installed parking ticket machines in the foreshore area around Nelson Bay marina.
I'm sure Council would argue that it was to control a limited resource, however, it is quite obvious that Council believes that the obvious revenue raising justifies the impact on local residents and workers.
In relation to the entire 366 days of this year, there are an extremely small number of days which are crowded by an overwhelming influx of tourists.
However, outside these peak days, local residents, workers and much needed off-peak tourists are forced to suffer the inconvenience of locking the car, walking to the ticket machine, finding the right change, finding and putting your reading glasses on to work out the machine, getting the ticket (if the machine works properly), walking back to the car, unlocking the car, placing the ticket inside the car and relocking it again.
This process becomes even more difficult if you are a single mother with a small child or older person with mobility problems etc, let alone if it is pouring with rain.
And remember, this goes on all those extra days when there is a surplus of parking available.
In this day of fast everything, convenience and simplicity are king. Developers realise that the fanciest shopping centre is worthless unless there is plenty of close convenient parking avialable or people will not go.
By one beaurocratic stroke of a revenue raising pen, our elected Aldermen have inconvenienced all local residents, and provided a disincentive for tourists to visit as well as the effect on business because of the boycotting of the marina area by potential customers.
I have experienced this same plague in another geographic area wtih the result that it killed the Central Business District within the space of 10 years, because the inconvenience to people made the businesses close down or move and now that same Council has spent many millions of dollars dressing up the CBD to make it more attractive to lure people back. However, the damage has been done and the city centre is dead.
Unfortunately, Council is not accountable for this decision and because of the investment will not reverse the decision and pull out the machines or change the parking arrangements to only be during peak periods because they want to get a return on their investment.
Come on, Aldermen, get real and be in touch with the community you are responsible for. Trash these machines or restrict the days to which they are applicable.
If not, then lets vote out these Aldermen and replace with community oriented people who aren't so politically agenda'd.

Couldnt agree more with this comment, I have had 2 experiences now where I have gone "feed the beasts" (the vending machines) only to have the money taken and no ticket, rang the "all hours number" only to be told that i should go to another machine, I did this and the machine didnt work, rang the number again, care to hazard a guess what the reply was??? YEP find another machine, went to the third machine "out of order" displayed, I was taking my family on a whale cruise and time was running out so i left a note for thee Council Ranger, explaining what had happened and the steps i had taken to pay, net result of my troubles $75 fine
The comments about local and off season tourist parking are spot on, there are peak times and i dont see an issue with metres from a parking management perspective

Council should look at Residents Parking permits (as per some City areas) if they want to keep the meters. I really think that the parking meters should be only be on for peak weekends, Easter and Spring and summer school holidays. Businesses are suffering because of these meters and to think the car park adjacent to the visitors centre is metered - it's a joke. If we are serious about telling tourists about our beautiful area, giving them 15 minutes limit is a bit rough.

In a small UK village that I visited when staying with relatives all local rate paying residents were entitled to a pass that has their car rego and a simple clock with movable hands. This pass was displayed on the cars dashboard and allowed them 2 hours free parking in the pay and display car park. They set a dial on the pass to display the time they parked so that the parking officer could see if they were over the 2 hour free limit.
This would be a simple way to reward local rate paying residents with a small bonus of free parking when we just want to pop down to the Marina on a winters afternoon for an ice cream or a coffee??

COMMENT FROM ADMIN
David, this is a consultation and whilst I am sure that council will reply to clarify and answer questions I dont imagine that they will want to use this site to enter into debates. The idea is to listen to people's views.

Admin, the concept of consultation is two way, questions and issues are raised and council should respond, i have witnessed all to frequently (LEP) several instances whereby this council has sought comment from the public and zip has been done, this is a totaly public forum if council do not have anything to hide why cant they answer here, they dont anywhere else
