Infrastructure

by admin 10:53pm, 28 Apr 2008

Last year, Council committed to increasing spending on infrastructure and asset maintenance to catch up on ‘cleaning up the city’. This objective was reflected in pre-draft consultation with many comments calling for a greater focus on infrastructure maintenance and renewal. Council is proposing an increase in infrastructure spending to around $29 million this year. This includes an expanded roads and stormwater program as well as the delivery of new infrastructure using developer contributions.
Do you have any comments on the expanded program?

I can find only $168k of expenditure on new cycleways. This is really tokenism and does not reflect a serious committment to expanding facilities as is implied by the text of the document. It is particularly disappointing as this is an area where a little bit of expenditure can achieve a lot. I understand there are many competing priorities for funds but as this cycleway is being funded by developer contributions surely council should at least match that and perhaps seek for the other governments to make a contribution too.

I agree, it would be great to cycle around without worrying about traffic. People would be healthier and it could become part of the City's identity. It fits the vision.

It is a great idea. People rave about the experience of cycling around Paris and Oxford - why not Newcastle!

Most of the so-called infrastructure extra is going on extra staff and consultants.

Let's face it ... NCC is not a Best practice project Manager, as demonstrated by the Newcastle Ocean baths fiasco
