Sunset Beach - Soldiers Point

by Margaret B 6:14pm, 26 Feb 2008

I have lived on Cromarty Road for the past 16 years and have the following observations and contributions about the ongoing management of the area.
1. My grandson tells me that the foreshore pathway south of Pearson Park could be elevated to allow access during high tides, reduce damage to the mangroves, and allow more people to use the area generally. It is currently a sandy and rocky path through the bush and not suitable for me.
2. If you are planning on encouraging more people to use Pearson Park then you need to improve the toilets. They are a bit of a disgrace.
3. The carparking area could also do with resurfacing. It is currently gravel and encourages younger drivers to do wheelies and make a lot of noise.
4. Council needs to be very vigilant and forceful in pursuing people who illegally remove trees along the foreshore just to improve their view. It has been suggested to me that this problem could be reduced by selective felling of trees where the regrowth is particularly thick. This may provide a balanced solution given that people have paid an terrible amount of money for their homes with water views only to find that over the years the trees grow up and block those views.
5. The park needs doggy doo plastic bag distributors. I have heard about these in Sydney. I think people should be allowed to walk their dogs, but we should remove the excuses for not cleaning up after them.
6. The access along Sunset Beach from Pearson Park to the Marina is not particularly good. It feels like you are walking through peoples ffront yards. Could a gravel path be installed?
7. Pearson Park needs more BBQs and sheltered seating.

I can't disagree with anything in Margaret's submission. Looks pretty sensible to me.

what a load of old cobblers! Gravel pathways in lieu of grassed areas; the way it is at p[resent is much more in keeping with nature. I live on this beach and pay exorbitant rates for the doubtful privelege. For this I [and most of my neighbours]cut the grass, pick up the mess left by the yobs who don't seem to be in the least intimidated by my presence. I even attempt to maintain the ugly little picnic table in the vicinity; were one to rely on the Council to attend to these chores it would be one hellish long wait and your gravel pathway would have lond been overtaken with weeds!

I hope Council takes on your comments Margaret. They are excellent. We need to see some foresight in planning along the foreshore. Other areas can have boardwalks over the water and reasonable paths linking areas. I haven't scrambled that area recently but I do recall doing it a few years back and then the path wasn't that user friendly. Pearson Park (Sunset Beach) is a beautiful place and it's a pity the toilet block is disgusting - pretty much like every toilet block on the Tomaree Peninsula. Similarly, the carparks at our beautiful spots are sadly in need of proper funding to have them sealed. There are green doggy doo bins at beach locations closer to Nelson Bay. Ask Council or your local Parks and Reserves Committee about them.

I am concerned that many of the trees in Pearson Park are getting very old and there appears to be few new ones growing to replace them when they eventually die. The trees particularly the Paper Barks are what make the park, they are also Koala habitat,(I have seen them there), it would be sad to see them die out, which is what will happen if positive action is not taken.
