Timing of the project

The Singleton CBD Streetscape has been progressively improved in recent years, but it still lacks something. Should Singleton Council accelerate this project over a 2-3 year period to achieve a far better CBD for both business and the community?

This online discussion forum has concluded. You can still browse the site but the discussion area will no longer accept new comments or votes.

Please do it as quickly as you can but try to protect existing business (not too much disruption).

Wake up! This amount of expenditure should NOT be rushed and it should be thoroughly researched in terms of the impact on the community. What about the traffic issues? We're already struggling to cope with the Ryan Avenue by-pass - have you ever been there to witness large truck movements taking up the entire intersection? If we've got $9M to throw around, it should be put toward a Singleton By-Pass well in advance of projects like this. Let's get our priorities in order - traffic flow first, to ensure that we aren't exacerbating what is already an elephant in the room, then we can deal with making the main street pretty. Yes, it will help our local businesses but it will be a death-knell for them all if we don't get it right.

Who on earth are you? I think it would completely irresponsible to rush through a decision as monumental as this. Business would inevitably be disrupted, which is a great reason to NOT do it; particularly in light of the new shopping centre about to be built next to Gowrie Street Mall. Yes, it lacks something - but not $9M worth of something!!! Beautify with some plants and some incentive for commercial building owners to keep their frontage well presented.

2 million Dollars has already been spent on Streetscape for no apparent improvment. Why waste another $8 Million

Who are you,

Lets see how we go in trying to figure it out:-

Wants it done Fast - Hmmm Either a Councilor or a Business Owner

Not too much interuption - Well thats a Business owner for sure, maybe they are still a Councilor as well.

But no Who Would hide behind such a name, If we are going to be Transparent like the Site Administration Suggests then We should Have No Problems Identifying ourselves or at least Using our First Name.

Whoever you are I remember a story my Mum told me once about a Wolf hiding in Sheep's Clothing, Whatever that meant.

Anyway Lets find out what the WHOLE of the Singleton COMMUNITY wants not just some.

Regards

GordonT

Just reading through these comments, I have actually been to a few forums, I am a ratepayer and a local business owner and I feel that most business I have spoken too are worried that the flow of traffic will use the bypass and lead straight to the big shopping centre. Most of them feel just like you and I feel we all had a chance to voice our opinions on the 13th of November. We have feed back forms to fill out and return If you want your say lets get out there and do it productively and let us be heard by attending forums and also filling in the form. It is also on the singleton Web site. So if you do not want it do the right thing and fill out the paper work.

In whose opinion does it still lack something? Have we learned nothing from the 1980's? Surely there are people with better, more innovative ideas to rejuvenate the main street to ensure its survival? Why wouldn't you choose to enhance the heritage features or utilise the two lanes that run west of John street as feature areas - they're pretty pointless now, as far as vehicular thoroughfare is concerned. No, council should NOT accelerate this at all.

COMMENT FROM ADMINISTRATOR

There have been a suspiciously large number of sign ups for users in Singleton coming from a single computer (IP address).

This does happen from time to time when the computer is in a school or library or where a family is involved. However, in this instance we have 29 signups from a single address mostly well outside business hours and all exhibit virtually identical voting patterns (against the development).

If there is an explanation for this other than it being a somewhat clumsy attempt to undermine the consultative process we would like to hear it. In the absence of an explanation we will simply include details of the activity from these users in our report to Council so that they can take this activity into account in their analysis of the consultation. We have already notified Council of this activity.

For online consultation to function properly and allow the community to participate at their convenience there has to be an open sign up process. We believe that transparency is the key to making these processes work and will always inform the community if we believe that attempts are being made to subvert the process.

Don't blow it all in one go! Slowly but surely is the way to go - sure focus on what are determined to be the most important parts first. If it takes 5 to 10 years we will still see a benefit. What does it lack exactly?
