What actions can we include in our plan to improve the future of the Manning Valley? Key theme: Providing employment opportunities

by GTCC Project Coordinator 25 Nov 2009, 1:25pm

The discussion paper sets out "The Big Four" emerging themes from the first round of consultation for the 20 year Manning Valley Community Plan. These included:

Respecting our environment;

Fixing our roads and bridges;

Providing employment opportunities; and

Building a sense of hope and pride

In terms of providing employment opportunities,the future of our community will depend on our capacity to build a strong, broad-based local economy.

There are a number of growing trends within our local economy. These include:

An increase in service industries, particularly knowledge-based industries;

An increase in retail trade;

A higher proportion of employment in health and community services;

A stronger trend towards home-based business.

Refer to section three of the discussion paper on pages 35-37 regarding issues and options arising from the first round of consultation in respect to employment opportunities covering the topic areas of finding the right balance, strenghtening what we have, capitalising on opportunities and strategies for moving forward.

1. WHAT ACTIONS DO YOU THINK COUNCIL COULD TAKE TO STRENGTHEN EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR LOCAL AREA?

2. WHICH INDUSTRIES AND WHAT TYPE OF JOBS SHOULD BE TARGETED FOR OUR FUTURE?

3. WHAT IDEAS DO YOU HAVE FOR PROMOTING OUR AREA'S ADVATANGES AND OPPORTUNITIES?

as a former resident of Taree in the 1970s and returning to live at Wingham for the past 2 years. Returning after all these years the manning area seems to be left behind. the dairy and timber industry are almost gone Tourism is great but could be better. like the late 70s young people have to venture to the cities for employment. (Try getting to Taree from Wingham or regional hamlets if you have no car or Lisence?)

Large regional centres in NSW have either a specialist industry be it education,mining,tourism or manufacturing. the Manning has these but small in more…

johnh you have identified an important group namely the Age Pensioner Group. If I may expand on that a little further and define the group as Seniors i.e. people aged 55+. Another aspect of this demographic group is they contain a large number of 'baby boomers' [born between 1946 and the early sixties]. The State Government has identified in its Mid North Coast Regional Strategy Plan that a significant number of Sydney residing 'baby boomers' have started or intend to retire to the Mid North Coast. Probably spent there earlier child rearing days holidaying here.

This group is cashed up from selling their homes and a high probability of sustainable 'super'.

However is this group welcome here ?. You will not find it written down anywhere that they are not welcome but it is interesting to view the Council relocate here page.

Nowhere on that list are items conducive to Seniors. If the advertisers have recreated the marketing strategy accurately it would appear Young People in bikinis are welcome. Wonder if they can bring their job with them.

Point 1:

'Kick start' the local economy with building activity. In past Australian business cycles it has been the accepted practice. However that means attracting capital to the region to stimulate activity. Leave that up to you but its really a simple business decision/s.

Ensure a conducive environment to attract developers. In general developers will follow market needs in order to inject working capital. Hence all stake holders win.

Council should allow developers to determine market needs and perform a constructive, meritous approach to developments minimising approval times. Greater flexibility in zoning requirements for developments is essential.

Point 2:

Any industry that is legally more…
