I think they cameras are great, but unless someone is watching a live feed then they will only be used as evidence after-the-fact.
Knowing the local Orange Police, and they're complete lack of caring for stopping drunken violent crimes, you would have to be very very lucky to get an officer who pursues an assault or minor robbery case.

They have to be a positive move. The amount of damage done to businesses has been unacceptable - broken windows, fires etc. They will also deter the violence that occurs. Unfortunately some go out just looking for trouble and brag about the assaults they make on others. Catching and punishing a few of these daytime upright/nighttime drunk and disorderly will act as a valuable deterrant.

There has already been significant changes on the amount of crime in areas that have cctv. dublin for example has seen a dramatic decline in petty crimes. an intelligent decision for an otherwise inept council.
