Graffiti prevention and removal is managed by a range of stakeholders, including Blue Mountains City Council. Council removes graffiti from Council-owned assets and supports the volunteer ‘Clean Up Katoomba Graffiti Removal team’. External stakeholders such as energy providers and Railcorp remove graffiti from their own assets.

Can we extend the volunteer program across the mountains ? This will assist with quick and widespread response.

Young people need to be involved in this inititaive - especially young people who graffiti currently or did in the past

The work being done by the volunteer ‘Clean Up Katoomba Graffiti Removal team’ is outstanding. Where a similar group of motivated individuals exist in other locations throughout the Mountains we should certainly extend the program - however, it is probably unrealistic to expect young people to 'volunteer' for this kind of work.

A well managed volunteer program could potentially involve young people from the Juvenile Justice Conferencing program who have been charged with vandalism offences, keeping in mind that in this circumstance the young person would still need to agree to the arrangement.

There are already street artists in the Mountains who see their art form as legitimate and are willing to work towards developing their work appropriately within the community. Blue Mountains Street Art Collaborative (BMSAC - www.bmsac.org.au) is one of these groups. With well managed & funded community support there is no reason for the talent of these artists to go untapped.
