In August 2008, Shenhua Watermark Coal Pty Limited (Watermark) successfully bid for the exploration licence to the Watermark site (195km2) near Gunnedah, NSW. An exploration licence provides the Watermark project team the opportunity to investigate the viability of coal mining within the exploration licence area.
